Naomi's story

I go by Lèonie Lure for all things pole dance, but my real name is Naomi. I'm 27 and turning 28 in May.

When did you start pole?

I tried a 4 week pole course one summer 8 years ago. Then, in my second year of university, I joined a pole society that started and never looked back. That would've been 6 years ago now.

What made you first try pole?

My best friend at the time! She didn't want to go on her own and knew I had the confidence to join her. At university, a friend knew I'd tried pole before so asked if I'd join the society with her for support.

What does life consist of outside of pole?

Despite owning (and being owned by) my cat, Hannibal, I'm self-employed as a Dog Walker and Pet Carer. So, I spent my days around dogs getting filthy. Beyond work, I'm a massive nerd, and like video games, anime, writing books I never finish and reading. I'm also part of both shooting and archery clubs at the weekends.

How often do you pole a week?

At the moment, between 2 and 3 nights a week. Generally, I do two lessons and either a free practice or a heels class if they're running.

Any comments about your pole journey so far?

It's been sketchy! I injured my shoulder and had to stop for a few months in after Uni. Then again when I got bitten by a dog and lost the use of my hands. Then covid hit, and I couldn't train for nearly two years. Before covid, I was in the advanced class, and it's been an adjustment realising I need to get my strength and stamina back up before I can be doing those moves again. Luckily, pole is fun and has a plethora of moves to try, so I've been enjoying trying new things and achieving new combos and moves as I slowly gain some ability back.

Favourite move and nemesis or most hated move?

Favourite move is the Russian Layback. It looks so elegant and pretty. Nemesis is currently Janeiro, I'm so close but can't quite get it.

If you could give any words of advice to someone thinking about trying pole, what would it be?

Try not to worry about strength or flexibility at the beginning. A lot of pole is in the technique and finding balance. The strength and flexibility will improve naturally as you learn. Enjoy the ride and focus on your achievements. You'll have moves that click easily and ones that don't, so if something doesn't suit you, don't sweat!
